Day 1 - Shinjuku Arrival

Omoide Yokocho

Memory Lane. Tiny smoky alleys of yakitori and ramen counters near Shinjuku Station, perfect for a first-night meal.

Golden Gai

Six narrow alleys of 200+ tiny bars, most seating only 5-8 people. Look for places with English signs or no cover charge if it's your first time.

Day 2 - East Tokyo

Senso-ji

Tokyo's oldest temple. Walk Nakamise-dori the famous shopping approach with senbei, ningyo-yaki and souvenir stalls. Arrive before 8 AM to skip the crowds.

Tokyo Skytree

634 m tall, two observation decks at 350 m and 450 m. Book online to skip the queue. Walking distance from Senso-ji or one stop on the Tobu line.

Ueno Park

Big urban park with the Tokyo National Museum, Ueno Zoo, Shinobazu pond and several smaller museums. Most museums close on Mondays, plan accordingly.

Akihabara (Mandarake)

Akiba's electric town and otaku district. Shops mostly open 11 AM to noon, so come in the afternoon. Mandarake is a great anchor for vintage manga and figures.

Day 3 - West Tokyo

Meiji Jingu

Forested shrine in the heart of Tokyo, dedicated to Emperor Meiji. Long gravel approach lined with cedar trees, quiet even at midday.

Yoyogi Park

Right next to Meiji Jingu, more open lawns and good people-watching. Sundays bring street performers, dog meetups and the famous rockabilly dancers near the entrance.

Takeshita Street

Harajuku's chaotic teen pedestrian street. Crepes, rainbow cotton candy, kawaii and Kpop everything. Worth seeing once. Very crowded on weekends.

Omotesando Avenue

Tokyo's Champs-Elysees, tree-lined boulevard with luxury flagships designed by world-famous architects (Tadao Ando's Omotesando Hills, Herzog & de Meuron's Prada).

Shibuya Sky

Open-air rooftop observation deck on Shibuya Scramble Square. Book the sunset slot in advance, sells out days ahead.

Shibuya Crossing

World's busiest intersection. Best view from Starbucks Tsutaya 2nd floor (free) or the Shibuya Scramble Square sky lobby.

Cat Street

Backstreet between Harajuku and Shibuya. Vintage clothing, indie boutiques, mellower than Takeshita. Great walking transition between the two areas.

Day 4 - Tsukiji, teamLab & Roppongi

Tokyo Tower

Iconic 333 m red and white tower. Best photographed from outside (Shiba Park or Roppongi side) than climbed. Climb if you want, but Shibuya Sky and Mori already cover the skyline.

Tsukiji Outer Market

Sushi breakfast, tamago skewers, uni, oysters, fresh tuna. ARRIVE EARLY: most shops wind down by 1 to 2 PM, the peak energy is 7 to 11 AM.

Roppongi Hills Mori Tower

Tokyo City View observation deck on the 52nd floor + Mori Art Museum on the same level. The art museum often makes the entry ticket worth it on its own.

teamLab Planets Tokyo

Immersive water-and-light art rooms in Toyosu. Book online in advance, prepare for bare feet and rolled-up trousers. Pairs naturally with Tsukiji which is 15 min away.

Day 5 - Imperial, Sumo & To Hakone

Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo)

Tokyo's sumo arena. Grand tournaments are in January, May and September only. May 10 to 24 should overlap, BOOK AHEAD via the official site or buysumotickets.com.

Imperial Palace East Garden

Free to enter, opens 9 AM. The palace itself isn't open but the East Gardens have the original Edo Castle keep foundation, moats and seasonal flower beds.

Day 6 - Hakone Loop

Hakone Open Air Museum

Sculpture park with a Picasso pavilion and a stained-glass tower. Plan 2 to 3 hours. Pairs with the Hakone loop on Day 6.

Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (Lake Ashi)

Pirate-themed cruise across Lake Ashi. Hakone Free Pass covers it. Buses can stack up at peak times, leave buffer.

Owakudani

Volcanic valley with sulfur vents, reached by ropeway. Famous black eggs (kuro-tamago) said to add 7 years to your life. Ropeway closes early in bad weather.

Day 7 - To Kyoto + Gion

Nishiki Market

Kyoto's kitchen, 400 m of covered food stalls. Tsukemono, dashimaki tamago, soy milk donuts. Easy lunch on Day 7 arrival.

Gion

Kyoto's geisha district. Photography is restricted on the private alleys, stay on Hanamikoji and side streets.

Pontocho

Narrow lantern-lit alley along the Kamogawa river. Best at dusk when the lanterns flicker on. Many restaurants have river-side decks (kawayuka) in May.

Day 8 - Kyoto: Arashiyama & North

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Get there before 9 AM, ideally before 8. After 9 it becomes a slow conga line. Quick walk-through, then Tenryu-ji is right next to it.

Hozugawa River Boat Ride

2-hour wooden-boat ride down the Hozu river back to Arashiyama. Gentle rapids, beautiful gorge. Pair with the Sagano scenic train one way and float back.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

Gold-leaf pavilion mirrored in the pond. Quick visit, 30 to 45 min is enough. Very crowded midday, go early or near closing.

Tenryu-ji

Zen temple right next to the bamboo grove. The Sogenchi pond garden alone is worth the entry. Skip the inner buildings if short on time.

Sagano Scenic Railway (Torokko)

Old-fashioned open-air train along the Hozu river gorge. 25 min one way. Pairs perfectly with the Hozugawa boat ride: train up to Kameoka, boat back down.

Nijo Castle

Shogun residence with nightingale floors that chirp under footsteps. Allow at least 1.5 hours. If Day 8 feels packed, this is the easiest one to drop.

Day 9 - Nara

Kasuga Taisha

Famous for its 3000 stone and bronze lanterns, all donated. Stunning forested approach. Lanterns lit only twice a year (Feb and Aug), but the daytime atmosphere is excellent.

Todai-ji

Houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) of Nara, 15 m tall bronze statue. The Daibutsuden hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Squeeze through the pillar with a hole if you can fit, it's said to grant enlightenment.

Nara Park

1200+ free-roaming deer. Buy shika-senbei (deer crackers) only when ready to feed, the deer are not subtle. They bow for crackers, kind of.

Day 10 - Hiroshima & Miyajima

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Plan 2 to 3 hours. Emotionally heavy. Doing Miyajima the same day after this can feel like whiplash, consider switching the order or splitting the day.

Hiroshima Castle

Reconstructed castle (the original was destroyed by the bomb). Small museum inside. Pick this OR Shukkeien.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Cenotaph, Children's Peace Monument, paper cranes for Sadako. Walk slowly. Free.

Atomic Bomb Dome

UNESCO World Heritage. The skeletal Hall of the Industrial Promotion preserved as a peace symbol. Visible from the Peace Park, just across the river.

Itsukushima Shrine (Floating Torii)

Vermilion shrine on stilts with the floating torii. Check tide tables, the visual changes completely between low and high tide. Allow 4+ hours including ferry. Better as its own day.

Shukkeien Garden

Compact landscape garden with islets, tea houses and a long arched bridge. 1 to 1.5 hour visit. Pick this OR Hiroshima Castle, both is overkill.

Recommendations

Fushimi Inari Taisha

RECOMMENDED if you fit in another Kyoto day. Get there at dawn, around 6:30 AM. The full hike to the top is 2 to 3 hours, but the inner shrines clear the worst of the crowd.

Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku no Michi)

RECOMMENDED. 2 km canalside path between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji, lined with cherry trees and small temples. Easy half-day walk that links naturally with Nanzen-ji.

Nanzen-ji

RECOMMENDED. Major Zen temple with the famous brick aqueduct (Suirokaku) running through the grounds. Free outer area, paid sub-temples. Pairs with Philosopher's Path.

Kiyomizu-dera

RECOMMENDED if you fit in another Kyoto day. Iconic wooden stage temple over the Higashiyama hillside. Open from 6 AM. Pair with Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka for a full Higashiyama half-day.
