Day 2 - Hiroshima Light Day
Hiroshima Museum of Art
Strong French Impressionist collection (Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh) plus modern Japanese painters. Quiet, calm, great rainy-day pick.
Shukkeien Garden
Compact landscape garden with islets, tea houses and a long arched bridge. Easy 1 to 1.5 hour visit, perfect for a slow Day 2.
Day 3 - To Matsue (+ Kure optional)
Matsue Samurai Residence (Buke Yashiki)
Preserved middle-rank samurai house on Shiomi Nawate, the old samurai street. Pairs naturally with the Hearn museum next door.
Yamato Museum (Kure)
Optional Day 3 detour. 1/10 scale Yamato battleship plus naval/shipbuilding history. 30 min train from Hiroshima, but it eats Matsue evening time.
Matsue Castle
One of only 12 surviving original castle keeps in Japan. Climb to the top floor for the lake view. Combine with the boat tour around the moat.
Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum
Small museum on the Greek-Irish writer who married into Matsue and wrote the foundational ghost stories of Japan. The actual Hearn residence sits next door.
Day 4 - Tottori
Uradome Coast Island Cruise
40 min boat tour through clear-water sea caves and rock formations. Strong San'in coast picture if Tottori survives the cut. Coast trail also walkable.
The Sand Museum
World-class sand sculpture museum, themed exhibits change yearly. 30 min walk from the dunes (or short bus). Easily worth the entry fee.
Tottori Sand Dunes
Japan's largest sand dunes, 16 km of coastline. Camel rides and paragliding optional. Best photos at sunset when shadows define the ridges.
Day 5 - Mount Daisen
Adachi Museum of Art
Modern Japanese paintings + a garden ranked #1 in Japan for 20+ years running. In Yasugi, between Matsue and Yonago. Free shuttle from Yasugi Station. Possible rain-day swap for Daisen.
Daisenji Temple
1300-year-old temple at the trailhead of the Daisen summit hike. Hike starts here, descends back here. Pair with Ogamiyama Shrine just above.
Mount Daisen
Tottori's 1729m volcano. The standard summit loop is around 6 hours, late May should have the wooden boardwalk fully open. Check weather, mountain weather is fast-changing.
Day 6 - Izumo & Hinomisaki
Izumo Taisha
One of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to Okuninushi (god of relationships and en-musubi). Clap 4 times instead of 2 here. Massive shimenawa rope.
Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse
Tallest stone lighthouse in Japan (43.65 m), still operational. Climb 163 steps for the view. CAREFUL: last bus back through Izumoshi is around 6 PM.
Hinomisaki Shrine
Vermilion shrine right on the cape. Often deserted, very atmospheric. 25 min bus from Izumo Taisha along the coast road.
Day 7 - Toward Fukuoka (Tsuwano alt)
Taikodani Inari Shrine (Tsuwano)
1000+ vermilion torii gates climbing the hillside. Often called a quieter Fushimi Inari. Tsuwano itself is a tiny preserved castle town. Day 7 detour if going via Yamaguchi.
