All the travel times below start from here. Almost every one of these trips works without a car, by direct train.
30 minutes from Tokyo. The big city next door, calmer and facing the sea: Minato Mirai, Chinatown, the Red Brick Warehouses.
50 minutes from Shinjuku. Tokyoites' favorite hike, still inside Tokyo prefecture. Packed on weekends, almost empty on weekday mornings.
1 hour from Tokyo. The Great Buddha of Kotoku-in, around thirty temples, and the coast at the end of the Enoden line.
1h05 from Tokyo, and three Enoden stops from Kamakura: the two combine perfectly in a single day. An island you reach on foot across a bridge.
1h10 from Shinjuku. The western Tokyo nobody visits: the Tama River, old hand-painted movie signs, and a surprising burger scene.
1h30 from Shinjuku on the Romancecar. The classic onsen break, with Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji on a clear day. Doable in a day, better with a night.
2 hours across Tokyo Bay (by train, or ferry from Kurihama). Chiba's sawtooth mountain: a giant stone Buddha and a viewing ledge over the void.
2 hours from Shinjuku by direct bus. Mount Fuji seen from the water, when it feels like showing up. Check the weather the day before, or the trip loses its point.
2 hours from Asakusa. The golden Toshogu shrine under the cedars, and the waterfalls on the plateau just above. A long day, but well worth it.
2h45 from Tokyo on the direct Odoriko. The farthest on the list and a bit crazy for a day trip, but the turquoise water of Shirahama is worth it if you catch the first train.
